Charging your Electrified Vehicle (BEV & PHEV)

As charging technology and infrastructure advance, owning an Electrified vehicle is becoming more convenient and cost effective. Both Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) can be charged from the comfort of your garage, or at the growing number of public charging stations.

PHEV vs BEV charging

What’s the difference?

A Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) runs entirely on electricity and needs to be plugged in to recharge, so it’s helpful to plan your charging stops ahead of time. A Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) offers added flexibility. It can be charged like a BEV, while also using a petrol engine for longer drives, giving you the freedom to keep going even when charging isn’t readily available.

Battery Electric

Power Source

Runs exclusively on electricity, stored in a large traction battery.

Charging

Requires external charging from a power source, like a home outlet or public charging station, to replenish its battery.

Operation

You cannot refuel it with petrol; its driving range is entirely dependent on its electric charge.

Compatibility

Plug-in Hybrid Electric

Power Source

Combines a petrol engine with an electric motor and a rechargeable battery.

Charging

Its battery can be charged from an external power source, similar to a BEV, while the petrol engine can be refuelled as usual.

Operation

When the battery charge depletes, the petrol engine activates to power the vehicle in Hybrid mode.

Finding a charger near you

Australia has a growing number of public charging stations, offering more opportunities to keep your vehicle charged throughout your journey.

Types of charging

What are the charging options?

Home

Mode 2: Household powerpoint charging

How it works

Charge by plugging your vehicle straight into a standard Australian wall powerpoint.

Benefits

Mode 2 charging can be an effortless partial overnight top up while you sleep.

Charging cable

Mode 2 cable included with all BEV and PHEV Toyota vehicles.

Home & public

Mode 3: AC charging

How it works

Charge at a public AC charger or at home with a dedicated AC wall charger.

Benefits

Mode 3 makes for a convenient top-up if travelling shorter distances and using public charging stations for additional power when needed.

Charging cable

Mode 3 cable included with all BEV and PHEV Toyota vehicles.

Public

Mode 4: DC fast charging

How it works

DC public fast chargers, often labelled Rapid or Ultra-Rapid, are commonly found at larger shopping centres and select fuel stations.

Benefits

Mode 4 is the fastest charging option available for a power top-up in the time it takes to enjoy your lunch.

Charging cable

Public DC fast chargers generally include a charging cable.

Installing a home charger

Charging tips

Knowledge for the road ahead

Charge smarter, save time, and make the most of everything electric driving has to offer.

Install a home AC charger

An at-home dedicated AC wall charger (Mode 3) can help ensure a fully charged vehicle while prolonging the vehicle’s battery life. Ask your local Dealer about installing one via JET ChargeC11 at an additional costM1.

Charge overnight

Wake up ready to go with a simple overnight charge. Using either a household powerpoint (Mode 2) or an AC wall charger (Mode 3), overnight charging is easy and convenient, potentially giving your car enough charge for daily electric driving, with usage reflected on your electricity bill. If your battery is very low, overnight charging, especially via a powerpoint, may not fully recharge it.

Limit fast charging

We recommend using AC charging options for everyday use. While DC fast charging is convenient for longer trips, frequent use may impact battery performance and longevity over time.

Manage charging speed

Charging a lithium-ion battery slows down as it nears full capacity. So you can get more power in less time by charging to 80% and stopping there. While charging to 100% is still an option, it may not be essential for your everyday driving and can help optimise long-term battery health.
